Your dog isn’t defying you. Pulling works — that’s the whole problem, and it’s also the way out.

Your shoulder aches, the lead is permanently taut, and everyone has a device that will fix it by the weekend. Pulling is the one puppy problem with a shop attached, and it’s why the advice is louder and more contradictory here than anywhere else.

Around 82% of owners report that their dog pulls on the lead. The person being towed down the street, apologising to a neighbour, isn’t a uniquely failing owner — that’s most of us. And the research takes pulling more seriously than “annoying”: it concentrates real force on a dog’s neck, and being pulled over is a genuine, common injury at the human end too. It’s worth solving properly rather than suppressing with something that adds a fresh risk on top.

Here’s the line the shop can’t tell you: equipment manages the pull; training changes it. No harness, head collar or lead has ever taught a dog to walk nicely. What gear buys you is comfort and safety while the teaching happens — worth having, but it isn’t progress.
